gamsat organic chemistry videos

Organic chemistry is a key part of GAMSAT. If you do not know this you are setting yourself up for failure. Here are a whole heap of videos relating to organic chemistry. The majority of these are provided by Chemguy who has over 200 HD videos covering all aspects of general chemistry and organic chemistry. We encourage you to visit his website as he has more videos than are listed here.

Please note that while these videos cover a large portion of the GAMSAT assumed knowledge, they are not an exhaustive study guide. You should also consult a textbook to consolidate your learning.

Introduction to organic chemistry

Here Chemguy lays the foundations for learning about organic chemistry.

Organic chemistry nomenclature

In this video Chemguy covers how to name organic compounds starting with alkanes. Naming organic compounds is an essential skill for GAMSAT.

Remember that the prefix denotes the number of carbon atoms in the organic molecule.

meth 1 pent 5
eth 2 hex 6
pro 3 hept 7
but 4 oct 8

Organic chemistry bonding

Here Chemguy covers the mechanics of how organic molecules bond and their shape and arrangment configurations. not as tricky as you thought!

Alkenes and saturation of molecules

In this video we learn from Chemguy (our favourite chemistry teacher ever!) how double bonding works. It is also important for GAMSAT to have a strong understanding of the concept of saturation as relates to bonding as you will encounter many gamsat questions that assume this knowledge..

Alkynes

Here we learn about alkynes - organic molecules with triple bonds.

Branching and nonmenclature overview

Here Chemguy goes over how to name branched organic molecules - make sure you have this down solid for GAMSAT.

Benzene and aromatic molecules

For GAMSAT it is essential to understand benzene and other aromatic molecules.

Alcohols

Alcohols are one of the most important functional groups in organic chemistry. For GAMSAT you need to know their structure, be able to name them, and be able to compare and contrast their properties with that of other functional groups. There's more to alcohols than drinking them!

Carboxylic Acids

Another key functional group in organic chemistry. Again you must know their structure and properties. Also have a think about possible reactions and how this relates to acid-base chemistry.

Esters

Another key functional group in organic chemistry. Again you must know their structure and properties. Also have a think about possible reactions and how this relates to acid-base chemistry.

Ketones, Aldehydes, Ethers and Amines

More functional groups that you must understand.

Substitution reactions

You need to understand the different types of organic reactions.

Addition reactions

It is not uncommon to get a GAMSAT question asking you to identify or predict what type of reaction a molecule will undergo.

Combustion and Elimination reactions

This is a fundamental type of reaction that you should know for GAMSAT.
